Chairman clarifies transfer deals

24.06.2004 | Bayern's summer transfer dealings have hit the headlines in re
cent weeks. The club has targeted Portugal star Deco, but fans fear the Muni
ch giants could lose Ballack, Kahn, Sagnol and Hargreaves.

Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has now spoken out in response to these quest
ions. In an interview published on Thursday by respected weekly kicker, the
club chief clarified many of the remaining questions. fcbayern.de summarises
the chairman's most important statements.

kicker interview with Rummenigge:

Question: Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, how do you rate Euro 2004 so far?

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: "Very good, it's the best European championships sinc
e we've had this format. There's never been such depth of quality, it's bett
er than you see at the World Cup. Everyone's given everything they've got fr
om the first minute, it's been played at high pace and all the teams are phy
sically fit."

Question: You watched transfer target Deco in Portugal's game against Russia
, but why have you failed in this high profile transfer?

Rummenigge: "There's been far too many rumours on the subject, and we're ref
using to get involved - only to say: the player's not coming to Bayern."

Question: Because he's too expensive, or isn't he good enough? Or is it beca
use Michael Ballack's staying, as Barcelona haven't offered enough?

Rummenigge: "We haven't sat down with Barca at all. I reckon the Spanish wer
e testing our readiness to do business, although the facts are these: Ballac
k has a contract until 2006. If we want to change that we'll go and talk to
the player, but if he wants to change that he'll have to come to us."

Question: Ballack waited until the end of last season until going public wit
h criticism that he never received full backing from the club. Why won't you
or Uli Hoene? give him the backing he wants?

Rummenigge: "Anything any player says to the media has no influence whatsoev
er on us. We never respond to player interviews, and we especially never han
d out votes of confidence."

Question: So you're going to make keeper Oliver Kahn stay, even though he ex
pressly asked for a move before the European Championships?

Rummenigge: "I haven't heard anything about any offer for him, and we haven'
t put him on the transfer list. The situation is the same: he has a contract
with us until 2006."

Question: Will you let Owen Hargreaves leave?

Rummenigge: "No one's made us an offer yet."

Question: What about central defenders Thomas Linke and Sammy Kuffour? One o
f them is surplus to requirements?

Rummenigge: "Uli Hoene? has informed Linke that it could be very difficult f
or him next term."

Question: Why have you spent so much on the youngster Gorlitz? Are you tryin
g to provoke Willy Sagnol?

Rummenigge: "No, he's very talented and we're hoping he'll make the most of
the opportunity at Bayern."

Question: Presumably you've signed a Brazilian World Cup winner to cure the
defensive problem?

Rummenigge: "We don't have a defensive problem, but we'll have an even bette
r back four with Lucio."

|
